MORE ABOUT US

Vision

Inspiring purposeful living and fostering thriving communities through learning, creativity, and innovation.

Mission

Furman University challenges and supports lifelong learners through rigorous inquiry, transformative experiences, and deep reflection to lead lives of meaning and consequence.

Values

In championing the liberal arts and sciences, Furman University cultivates a community of learners engaged in an effort to understand themselves, the world, and their place in it.

To support this quest for knowledge and meaning, we steadfastly protect freedom of inquiry and hold ourselves to high standards of excellence and integrity. We foster a passion for lifelong learning by nurturing the growth of each individual as a whole person: intellectually, spiritually, emotionally, and physically.

As we draw lessons from thoughtful consideration of our university’s past, we advocate respect for all people and actively welcome perspectives from a wide variety of backgrounds, cultures, and beliefs.

We aspire to advance thriving communities that honor inquiry, promote diversity, strive for equity, appreciate beauty, and act as responsible stewards of our planet.

These aspirations inspire our vision and shape our mission, calling us to meet the challenges and responsibilities of a complex, diverse, and rapidly changing world with courage, moderation, justice, wisdom, and humility.

THE PROGRAM

The Furman University Rugby Club was established in 1998 and has become one of the top rugby programs in the country.

Furman University is very unique in the sense that we are one of the very few places where “Higher Education” and “High-Level Rugby” intersect.

During their time at Furman, our student-athletes will compete for National Championships & National Honor Society recognition. From year to year, we are always competitive on the pitch and typically 25%-30% of our team is on the university’s Dean’s List.

Our players have been selected to All-Conference teams, Collegiate All American Camps, and earned International Caps. Our graduates have gone on to pursue their post-graduate degrees at institutions such as NYU, Fordham, MUSC, Georgetown, and Vanderbilt.

We have an amazing dedicated natural grass stadium that has been selected to host multiple USA Rugby National Championship events.  We operate two mentorship programs that are designed to help our student-athletes with both the in-bound (arriving freshmen) and out-bound (graduating seniors) process.

The team’s Head Coach is USA Rugby Level 300 certified and has been involved with the USA Collegiate All American training sessions for the past two years.

Furman advanced to the Championship match (or the Final 4) in 2016, Sweet 16 in 2017, and the Elite 8 in 2019
